Some facts about the Royal College of Kamuli

"Royal" refers to the Royal Reign of Jesus. In Uganda, "college" has the same meaning as "high school" does in the US. This school serves students in grades "S-1" through "S-4." Completing S-6 would be the equivalent of finishing high school.

This school was founded in about 2002 to serve needy students, many of whom have lost one or both parents to AIDS or other diseases. The school is a private school with a Christian foundation, but it takes students from any background who are willing to live on campus and work hard. The current school population is about 200 students and 16 full and part time teachers.

The subjects taught include: English, math, physics, geography, commerce, Christian living, music, chemistry, biology, and art. Besides doing their school work, the students take care of their own dorm space, wash their own clothing, help in the garden, clean up the school compound, help with the cooking and dishes, and help serve some of the elderly neighbors by working in their gardens.

They live in crowded dorms, go to school in minimal class room spaces, get by without electricity, yet they will be competing with students from across their country on exams and for future jobs. Their teachers work hard for minimal pay.
